‘High Energy Laser Weapons’.
Across the world, countries are looking to integrate high energy lasers in their weapons arsenal for defensive and offensive purposes. The Netherlands is no exception. The Royal Dutch Navy has the ambition to incorporate a high energy laser weapon on the new Multipurpose-Frigates to counter missiles and swarming attacks. [1] Using lasers to defeat targets is a completely new way of combatting threats and fundamentally different from traditional kinetic weaponry.
TNO, together with the Dutch Ministry of Defence and industrial partners, is performing research in the area of High Energy Laser Weapons in order to determine what can be achieved with this weapon, what technical challenges arise and how to use it in an operational setting. This research requires a multidisciplinary team of i.e. system engineers, optical engineers and physicists.
During this lecture I will give examples of research being done in the field of high energy lasers, the basic principles of laser weapons and the challenges that arise when employing it.
