At the Faculty of Science, a unique Master’s programme is being developed that will educate a new generation of scientific researchers and academic professionals who are eager to work at the frontier of physics, computer science and mathematics. MSc Quantum Computer Science (QuCS) is a two-year programme that equips students with advanced knowledge, skills, and insight in quantum information processing. Graduates will be able to actively contribute to the understanding of the position, role, and responsibility of quantum technologies, particularly quantum information processing, in science and society.

MSc QuCS is currently undergoing the lengthy procedure of getting approval from the Dutch government (NVAO accreditation). To get the programme up and running for welcoming a first cohort of students in September 2024, we are looking for students to support the QuCS project team with both content related and organisational tasks.

Depending on your academic background, skills and interests, Programme Assistant tasks may include:

  • Offering administrative and hands-on support during the accreditation procedure, which includes a site-visit by a NVAO panel at Science Park
  • Answering questions (via email) from prospective students about (experiences with) quantum education at the UvA and specific quantum courses
  • Participating in informational activities, for instance during the UvA Master’s Week
  • Creating informational materials, such as video-testimonials about lecturers and courses and brochures
  • Assisting with preparations for the start of newly designed or redesigned courses, for instance setting up Canvas

It is also possible to switch to a Teaching Assistant role, once the new programme has started, in which you support course coordinators and students.

For this role, the essential requirements are:

  • You have been a student at Science Park for at least one year
  • You can demonstrate that you are interested in quantum related topics
  • You have successfully completed one or more quantum courses at the UvA (preferably ‘Quantum Computing’ (Ronald de Wolf) and ‘Quantum Information Theory’ (Maris Ozols))
  • You have excellent English skills (verbal & written)
  • You work well independently and as part of a team
  • Your schedule allows for some flexibility

It would be a huge asset if you have (some) experience in an Assistant’s role, for instance as a Teaching Assistant.

Workload

The expected workload will be about 6-16 hours per week, depending on your own schedule and the specific tasks that you prefer.

Interested?

If you are interested, please send an email, including your relevant experiences (followed courses, projects, personal interests, TA experiences etc.) and expected availability in the next 3-6 months, to the project team’s shared mailbox: msc-qucs-science@uva.nl If you have any questions about the role, please contact Lisa van Pappelendam (Project Lead): A.L.vanPappelendam@uva.nl
